Esclanyà: A Holiday in the Heart of Catalonia on the Costa Brava

Esclanyà is a charming little village in Spain, nestled inland in Catalonia, about 6 kilometers from the picturesque beaches of the Costa Brava. It is part of the municipality of Begur and is located in the northwest of this region.

Historically, Esclanyà has been closely linked to the "Señores de Cruïlles," who owned the village until the end of the Middle Ages. The village itself is centered around the impressive Church of Sant Esteve d'Esclanyà, first documented in 1280. The church combines various Romanesque architectural styles, some of which date back to the 10th century, suggesting that an earlier temple may have existed at this site.

Another historical highlight is the Castle of Esclanyà, commonly known as the Esclanyà Tower. This building dates back to the 14th century. Today, the large, rectangular Romanesque tower still stands, featuring battlements on its northern side.

Traditionally, the people of Esclanyà primarily relied on viticulture and olive farming for their livelihood. Additionally, tile production became one of the village’s most important industrial activities. The picturesque atmosphere, combined with its rich history and idyllic landscapes, makes Esclanyà a place where history and nature come together in perfect harmony.
