The picturesque coastal town of Peñíscola with around 8,000 inhabitants is located on the Costa del Azahar and offers holidaymakers long sandy beaches and a wide range of fiestas and entertainment. Resort is known for two films, Calabuch (1956) and the Spanish heroic epic El Cid, which was filmed in 1962 against the backdrop of Peñíscola. The old town of the is picturesquely situated on a rocky promontory in the sea and on the hill rises an old Templar castle, which was built in 1294 on the ruins of a Moorish fortress.
