Tamariu, the smallest, most unspoiled, and most beautiful of the coastal towns in Catalonia

Tamariu, an idyllic district of the Catalan municipality of Palafrugell on the Costa Brava, is beautifully nestled between cliffs and wooded hills. With its tranquil location by the Mediterranean, just about 100 kilometers south of the French border, Tamariu offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and traditional charm. The village has preserved its original character, despite the modern influences that have emerged over the years.

The main beach of Tamariu, Platja Gran, is distinguished by its coarse sand and crystal-clear water. Particularly impressive is the Lliris cove to the south of the beach, where a historic fishermen's hut stands as a testament to days gone by. To the north, we find the picturesque Cala d’Aigua Dolça, a rocky cove that captivates with its seclusion and natural allure. Those who explore the coastline from the sea – whether by kayak, boat, or swimming – will discover the pristine Cala d’Aigua Xelida, an untouched gem of the coast that can only be reached by water. Heading south from Lliris, the coastal path leads to another beautiful cove, Cala Pedrosa, which also features an old fishermen's hut and invites visitors to linger.

Tamariu comes alive each year on the first Saturday in September, when the traditional fishermen's singing, the "Cantada d’Havaneres," takes place. This event on the main beach attracts visitors from all over the region and revives the ancient traditions of sailors and fishermen.

The name "Tamariu" is derived from the tamarisk trees that characterize the surroundings. These distinctive trees line the peaceful beach promenade, which is flanked by charming, raised former fishermen's houses. The combination of white buildings, fine sand, and natural vegetation creates a friendly and inviting atmosphere. A lovely path runs between the buildings and the beach, making walks along the coastline a special experience.

Tamariu is a tranquil retreat that enchants nature lovers and those seeking peace with its authentic character, diverse landscapes, and charming coves. A stay in Tamariu means experiencing the true beauty of the Costa Brava, away from the major tourist centers, and enjoying the Mediterranean lifestyle to the fullest.
