Begur: A Charming Gem of the Costa Brava with History, Culture, and Stunning Beaches

Begur is located in the Baix Empordà region, one of the most picturesque and diverse stretches of the Costa Brava. This charming town is the perfect starting point to explore the treasures of the surrounding area. Medieval villages like Pals and Peratallada are just a short drive away, transporting visitors back in time with their cobblestone streets and historic buildings. Also nearby are the picturesque coastal towns of Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc, which enchant visitors with their stunning beaches and small coves.

Begur's old town may be small, but it is full of charm and invites you to wander through its narrow, winding streets. Here, you'll find boutiques perfect for browsing and numerous restaurants and bars where you can indulge in delicious local cuisine. A particularly charming spot is the main square, Plaça de la Vila, where the town hall and the Esglèsia de Sant Pere church stand. This 17th-century church is an impressive example of late Gothic architecture and is named after the town's patron saint. Around the square, numerous cafés and restaurants invite you to relax while watching the lively bustle of the town.

As you stroll through Begur, you'll frequently come across the magnificent Casas Indianas—colonial houses built by wealthy emigrants who returned from Cuba. These historic buildings reflect the town’s rich history and add a unique charm to the area. Overlooking the town is the medieval Begur Castle, whose ruins sit atop a wooded hill. Originally built in the 11th century, the castle has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout history. Today, it offers fantastic views over the town and the surrounding landscape.

A special highlight in the spring is the Begur Flower Festival, held at the end of April or early May. During this time, the streets and squares are adorned with colorful floral displays, and a variety of concerts and cultural events create a joyful, festive atmosphere.

The beaches around Begur are among the most beautiful on the Costa Brava. They are highly diverse, ranging from fine sandy beaches to rocky coves. Some are more secluded and have retained their natural beauty, while others can be quite busy in the summer. Water shoes are especially recommended for children, as the path to the water often involves slippery and sharp stones. However, this rocky landscape and crystal-clear water make the coves around Begur a paradise for snorkelers, divers, and kayakers. Most of the beaches are easily accessible by car, making them popular spots for sunbathers and nature lovers alike.
